16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence
Campaign is an international campaign that began in 1991. From November
25th, the International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women,
to December 10th, International Human Rights Day, the campaign calls on
individuals and groups around the world to act to end all forms of
violence against women and girls.

Making the critical link between
violence against women and human rights, the campaign observes several
significant dates in its 16 days, including November 29th, International
Women’s Human Rights Defenders Day; December 1st, World AIDS Day; and
December 6th, the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre.

Say NO – UNiTE is pleased to present 16
actions that you can take, wherever you are, to mark the 16 Days of
Activism. Pick as many as you like, or take the action of the day.

16 Ways to Say No to Violence Against Women

1. Do you know someone who doesn’t know about the 16 days of activism? Take the first step – make them aware! Share why Soroptimist International campaigns on this issue, direct them to the UNiTE website and encourage them to read through the Soroptimist International  November monthly focus which is all about the 2011 theme: Militarism and Violence Against Women.
2. Create your own 16 Days action 
   – you can screen a film about violence against women, organize
   community events, marches, petition drives, awareness workshops and
   more.
3. Take the Say NO – UNiTE Quiz to test your knowledge and share it with your club and work colleagues, and promote on Facebook and Twitter.
4. Violence against women happens every minute, every day. Send a Wake Up Call to your friends, family and networks and start the conversation.
5. Take back the technology to prevent violence against women and girls. Help UNiTE collectively map incidents of technology-related violence
   against women happening all over the world. Make the invisible visible
   and demand for change.
6. Girls and young women are vulnerable to violence in their homes,
   schools, streets and work place. Join the World Wide Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to make their voice heard. On 30th November, at 3pm GMT UNiTE will be showing the documentary ‘The
   Hidden Truth’. Made by a young woman in Zambia, the film tackles the
   issue of domestic violence in Zambia and is being used as a tool for
   social change in local communities. The webinar will give you the opportunity to watch the film and talk to the filmmaker. Join the webinar today!
7. December 1st is the World AIDS Day. The World AIDS Campaign is all about
   getting to zero – zero  new HIV Infections, zero discrimination and zero
   AIDS related deaths. Pick your action here and demand for zero.
8. “What will it take to end violence against women and girls?” Join the Facebook discussion and Tweet using #16DaystoSayNO.
9. In cities around the world, women and girls face sexual harassment in public spaces. Hollaback to end street harassment. Take action!
10. There is no security without women’s security. What does security mean to you? Post your view.
11. Celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the UN Trust Fund – Watch this film "Reclaiming Life After Acid Attacks" and Take Action.
12. 16 Things that men and boys can do to end violence against women. To
    help commemorate this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender
    Violence, the White Ribbon Campaign encourages men and boys to take 16 steps to
    help make a powerful difference in promoting gender equality in your
    family, community, school, and workplace.Spread the word!
13. The first take back the night event took
    place in Philadelphia, in October 1975, after Susan Speeth, a young
    microbiologist was stabbed by a stranger a block away from her house as
    she was walking alone. Since then, many others Take Back the Night walks have taken place, around the world. Organize a Shine Your Light Walk to take back the night in your community.
14. Can violence against women end? Have your say – blog about it and post here
15. There is a global campaign to end violence against women led by the
    UN Secretary-General. Chat with UNiTE Campaign Manager Aldijana Sisic on Twitter using #AskUNiTE.
16. Consider making a donation to the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women to support projects that change women’s lives.
