Tuesday 25, November marks the beginning of 16 days of Activism Against Gender Violence and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
25 November was marked a day to combat and raise awareness of violence against women in 1981, originally marking the day
that three of the four Mirabal sisters from the Dominican Republic were assassinated in 1960 during the Trujillo dictatorship (Rafael
Trujillo 1930-1961).
In 1999, the sisters received recognition by the United Nations General Assembly, who designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in their honor.
16 Days
of Activism Against Gender Violence is an
international campaign which originates from the first Women’s
Global Leadership Institute, sponsored by the Center for
Women’s Global Leadership in 1991.
The campaign runs from November 25, International Day Against Violence
Against Women though to December 10, International Human Rights
Day.
Soroptimists will be
joining thousands of organisations around the world in taking part in 16 Days of Activism Against Gender
Violence, campaigning at local, national and international levels to END
violence against women and girls.
