The sixty-eighth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68) takes place from 11 to 22 March 2024 at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York. Soroptimist International is delighted to be taking part and helping to shape the agenda for women and girls. Our participation will include in-person and virtual events and cover topics including poverty, finance, climate change and gender equality.
This is an outline of the events that will take place in which we are involved.
Addressing Gendered Poverty: Best Practices and Lessons Learned (in-person)
Learn how Soroptimist’s work in local communities throughout the world Educates, Empowers and Enables women and girls to lift them from poverty so they can create better lives for themselves and their families.
The projects will reveal the improvement of the intersecting issues and discrimination affecting women in poverty and how they progress the systemic inequalities surrounding them. The various economic frameworks that have been effectively implemented throughout the projects, work towards the reduction of gendered poverty.

The Intersections of Gender, Poverty & Climate Change (virtual)
Extreme weather changes are impacting the global climate system that are affecting efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Climate change is a planetary phenomenon that will impact all people, but its effects are being shaped by pervasive and entrenched gender inequality. Climate change intensifies poverty by disrupting livelihoods, amplifying food and water insecurity, and fostering economic instability, presenting a significant challenge to achieving the SDGs.
Gender inequality coupled with the climate crisis is one of the greatest challenges of our time. It poses threats to ways of life, livelihoods, health, safety and security for women and girls globally.

Access to finances locally for Women through Gender Budgeting (virtual)
Demand donors and sponsors to revisit the way grants and other finances for local activities to local women are disbursed. The tool of gender-sensitive budgeting can be helpful for choices and monitoring.
The evidence shows that income inequalities have continued to increase both within and between countries which disproportionately impacts women and girls, and not helping them to act themselves. Currently, the intended financial support for the local level is not reaching women and girls. The methodology on disbursing/allocating funds needs changing, enabling them, not giving them more administrative burden. The session will inform on alternatives, practiced by organisations, interviewed by Women for Water Partnership (WfWP).
