Soroptimist International’s written statement to the 63rd Session of the United Nations (UN) Commission for Social Development (CSocD63) has now been submitted

Soroptimist International’s written statement to the 63rd Session of the United Nations (UN) Commission for Social Development (CSocD63) has now been submitted.

Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) with consultative status at the UN Economic and Social Council are invited to submit a written statement to the Commission. Soroptimist International holds General Consultative Status with the ECOSOC and can therefore participate.

The UN Commission for Social Development (CSocD) is one of eight functional commissions established by the ECOSOC since 1946 to advise and assist it in carrying out its work.

It is tasked with advancing the implementation of the Copenhagen Declaration and Programme of Action, established at the 1995 World Summit for Social Development. Additionally, the Commission on Social Development supports the UN in achieving its development objectives, including poverty reduction, enhancing social inclusion, and promoting employment and decent work for all.

The 63rd Session of the Commission for Social Development will take place from 10 to 14 February 2025, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The session will focus on enhancing solidarity, social inclusion, and cohesion to expedite commitments from the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development and align with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It will also address emerging issues including social resilience and social development.

Soroptimist International’s written statement focuses on three key themes: Eradicating Poverty, Promoting Full and Productive Employment, and Fostering Social Inclusion.

Soroptimist International’s mission to Educate, Empower and Enable all women and girls permeates these components of the Copenhagen Declaration, which aspired to “put people at the centre of development by ensuring full participation by all”. Yet, 30 years later, we are far from reaching full gender equality across public and private life.

When all women and girls are meaningfully included across public and private life, they can break through cycles of poverty, help to advance economies, realise social cohesion and contribute to sustainable and peaceful communities.

Soroptimist International calls on all UN Member States to focus on eradicating poverty, promoting productive employment, and enhancing social inclusion, aligned with our mission to Educate, Empower and Enable women and girls in all their diversity.

Soroptimist International’s statement includes recommendations to advance and invest in quality, lifelong education for all women and girls to remove barriers to resources for all women and girls, ensure gender parity in decision-making and enforce equal pay for work of equal value.
