Soroptimist International’s written statement to the 58th Session of the United Nations (UN) Commission on Population and Development (CPD) has now been submitted.
NGOs with consultative status at the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) are invited to submit their written statement to the Commission. Soroptimist International has General Consultative Status at the ECOSOC and can therefore participate.
ECOSOC established a Population Commission in 1946, which was later renamed the Commission on Population and Development by the General Assembly in 1994. This body leads efforts to monitor, review, and assess the implementation of the Programme of Action from the International Conference on Population and Development across the international, national and regional levels.
The 58th Session of the Commission on Population and Development will take place 7 to 11 April 2025 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The theme for this Session will be “Ensuring Healthy Lives and Promoting Well-being for All at All Ages”.
Soroptimist International’s written statement to the 58th Session of the United Nations Commission on Population and Development focuses on four key areas: gendered poverty, comprehensive sexuality education and reproductive rights, maternal healthcare, and the impacts of environmental change on health.
Soroptimist International calls for evidence-based policymaking, which emphasises the importance of data collection to inform effective interventions. This can help to ensure all women and girls’ access to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health and healthcare.
Soroptimist International calls upon all UN Member States to invest in the physical, mental, and reproductive healthcare for all women and girls, adopt universal and inclusive quality healthcare and prioritise women and girls’ participation, decision-making and leadership in policies that affect them.
