Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland (SIGBI), works at a local, national and international level to educate, empower and enable opportunities for women and girls. SIGBI has consultative status at the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the United Nations (UN).
Learning Opportunities
Winner SI Bangor and District – Itala Project
SI Bangor wanted to raise awareness of the importance of friendship links and international education. Holding a social event with a friendship emphasis and international guests, the event included guest speakers and a slide show presentation on a Mothers of Africa project in Liberia. There was information on birthing facility and resources needed.

Winner SI Jamestown – Supporting new Domestic Violence Bill and Transferring knowledge of the medicinal value of plants to younger children
Taking home two Awards and the overall Award at the SIGBI Conference, SI Jamestown’s Advocacy Award was given for their support of the domestic violence bill in Barbados. The club has been extremely active in lobbying the Ministry of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development to better the protection for women and children in Barbados.

Economic Empowerment
Winner SI Leigh and District – Just the Job
The aim of this project was to assist unemployed women in getting into the workplace. Workshops addressed low self-esteem, offering assistance and advice on personal presentation, providing clothes for interviews, and seeking to empower women, increasing confidence, hope and financial independence. Club members delivered interactive workshops providing practical advice and guidance to achieve interview success.

Food Security & Healthcare
Winner SI Madurai – Construction and Donation of Two rooms & equipment for children affected by Cerebal Palsy
This project provided purified drinking water ensuring good health for the women and children of Narasingampatti village. Women and girls of Narasingampatti village, Madurai had to carry drinking water from far off and the project involved the construction of a building by Aroghya Welfare Trust and the installation of a 2000 litre drinking water RO plant at the village in cooperation with the village Panchayat.
