AIDS Foundation Award to SI Denmark!

For many years the Union
of Denmark has been supporting the Danish AIDS foundation. This work has now
been recognised through a national award, presented on behalf of the Danish
AIDS Foundation. This award celebrates and acknowledges their advocacy and awareness
raising work.

Since 2004, Soroptimist
International Denmark has been a loyal partner of World AIDS Day, a UN initiative, where they
collected funds to support the national Danish AIDS Foundation. Furthermore, the Danish Union has supported the AIDS
Foundation’s local partners in Kenya, supporting HIV positive women.
In acknowledgement of their hard work and commitment to the Danish AIDS
Foundation, SI Denmark were presented with the Information Award 2012 in recognition of their advocacy and campaigning.

As
Henriette Laursen, the director of the AIDS Foundation, said on the
foundation’s website, "the disease is still “taboo” and in Denmark, many
people living with HIV/AIDS fail to tell their closest family and friends of
their disease, because of the stigma attached to it. HIV and AIDS often affects
groups in society who are already vulnerable and stigmatized. This is the case
in Denmark as well as in developing
countries.

Soroptimist International
Denmark received the Information Award 2012 during a ceremony on June 1st. Her Royal Highness Prinsess Marie of Denmark presented the Award to Union
President Hjoerdis Hansen, who was attended by Programme Director Maj-Britt
Scholz Andersen and Programme Director elect Thea Dalsgaard.

Since
2004 many Danish Soroptimist clubs all over the country have been selling the
AIDS ribbons on World AIDS Day (December 1), in addition to many other
advocacy and awareness raising events throughout the year. This has made
Soroptimist International visible both locally and nationally, whilst supporting an
important global cause which renders women particularly vulnerable.

Each year the Danish AIDS
Foundation presents four awards: The Science Award, The Information Award, The
Patient Award and The Business Award.

“We are especially
thankful for the information award because it perfectly matches the objectives
for Goal 2 on advocacy at all
levels, intensifying partnerships and raising our Soroptimist profile and
visibility”, said Birgit Aarsnes, SI Union Governor of Denmark.
