Celebrating Commonwealth Accreditation: A New Standard for Recognised Organisations

Blog by Pat Dale MBE, SI Representative to the Commonwealth.

On 11th February 2025, I was invited to attend a special event with the Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC. The event marked an important milestone for accredited organisations within the Commonwealth, with the introduction of a new accreditation badge—a unique symbol of verification and recognition for accredited bodies.

Strengthening the Commonwealth Network

The event celebrated the continued expansion of the Commonwealth family, which now comprises 92 accredited organisations. Among them, four new members were officially introduced:

  • The Commonwealth Chemistry Association
  • The Commonwealth Security and Resilience Group
  • The Institute for Economics and Peace
  • The Links, Incorporated

These organisations have been in existence for several years—decades in some instances—but all share “peace” as a common ambition. The CEOs of these organisations gave presentations, sharing their journey towards obtaining accreditation.

In her opening remarks, the Secretary-General acknowledged the vital role accredited organisations play in helping the Commonwealth Secretariat deliver on its mandates. Reflecting on their remarkable efforts, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, she stated:

“You have dedicated your time, energy, and expertise to advancing democracy, governance, and the rule of law. Your work has helped foster a society where the youth are empowered; gender equality is championed; and education, health, and sports are developed.

Additionally, you have supported our small and other vulnerable states by helping them address their unique challenges. For all of this, I extend my deepest gratitude and appreciation. Your hard work and commitment have made a profound impact in striving towards a world where prosperity, democracy, and peace are not rare, but a common reality for all citizens of the Commonwealth.”

The New Accreditation Badge

A key highlight of the event was the introduction of the new accreditation badge, which accredited organisations can display on websites, letterheads, and other official documents. As an additional layer of verification, accreditation confirmation letters can also be downloaded. Further guidance will be issued on its use.

The background of the accreditation badge was explained. The Commonwealth has 92 official organisations, yet some unauthorised organisations have used the word “Commonwealth” in their name, creating confusion. To address this, extensive research and investigations were conducted, both internally and externally, to verify the accreditation status of organisations. A team of 50 people, including members from the library and design teams, presented a plan to the accreditation party, which was approved by the Board of Directors.

The accreditation badge is not just any badge; it is a carefully considered verification tool that ensures credibility and trust. Each badge is unique, featuring a specific number and the name of the accredited organisation, assisting with verification. The badge will not interfere with existing organisational operations. It will be accessible on the Commonwealth website, with the register maintained by the Secretariat and updated on the annual report platform. Further guidance on how to use the badge will be provided soon.

Recognising Soroptimist International

During the event, the Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, recognised the work of Soroptimist International and presented a Certificate of Appreciation.

A family photograph of all accredited organisations was taken, and attendees welcomed the opportunity to connect and engage with one another.

Looking to the Future

A new Secretary-General, the Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, currently Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, will take office from 1st April 2025.
