"As of 7th April, there is once again a Soroptimist presence in
Jerusalem. Tonight’s charter of, SI
Hanan Nashif Jerusalem,
represents a new beginning, and new hope. The club
comprises of Jewish, Muslim and Christian members: a symbol of how Soroptimists
bring unity and show the way forward by working together for peace through
mutual tolerance and understanding.

It is the
only club in Jerusalem and was inspired by the godmothers Aliya Kedem and Batia
Biller to commemorate a much loved Soroptimist sister, Hanan Nashif.  The charter President Raneen Nashif is the
daughter of Hanan Nashif and her commitment to the club’s success in dedication
to her mother was very touching.

Past
President of SIE, Kathy Kaaf presented the charter. SIE’s President Elect
Renata Trottman Probst was also present and spoke of friendship. A message of welcome
was read from SIE President Maria Elisabetta de Franciscis.
It was obvious the club was welcomed with joy. Members of clubs from
many parts of Europe including Romania, Poland, Belgium, Italy, Germany,
Austria, Liechtenstein, and the UK. Gifts and greetings were presented,
including a substantial amount of money for their project. The club presented
two scholarships for further education – one being given to a Jewish woman and one to a young Arab woman.

For me it
was important to be there – the message of hope that a club of such diversity
brings was worthy of acknowledgement from Soroptimist International. Our theme
is Educate to Lead. We need leaders of the future who will work for gender
equality and peace. Our new club in Jerusalem captures that desire for
education and peace – and it was a great privilege to be able to address the
charter and light the candle for Peace. I wish the
club every success".
