Former SI President appointed Member of the Order of Australia (AM)

Dr Jane Zimmerman, former President of Soroptimist International,will be awarded the Order of Australia Medal, General Division, at a ceremony on Friday May 3, in recognition for her valuable contribution to the community as a Soroptimist.

Jane was a charter member of SI George Town, Tasmania (Australia) in 1982 and has served as President of her Region (1994-6), President of the Soroptimist International South-West Pacific Federation (1996-8) and President of Soroptimist International (1999-2001).

As Soroptimist International President, her annual appeals included Legacy of Learning, supporting girls’ education in Inner Mongolia and campaigns to stop human trfficking in India and Russia.

Jane graduated as a doctor at the University of Toronto in her native Canada in 1969, but moved to George Town, Tasmania, in 1981 where she set up practice with her former husband. In 2002, Jane joined the Anne Street Medical Centre where she continues to work. Jane is particularly active in women’s health, working for the Royal Flying Doctor’s Rural Women’s Health Service in areas where there is no female doctor.
