Launched by the UN Women in 2014 in New York, the ‘HeForShe’ campaign seeks to engage men and boys as advocates and agents of change for the achievement of gender equality and women’s rights. On
behalf of H.E President Paul Biya of Cameroon, the Prime Minister and Head of
Government Philemon Yang has pledged his support for UN Women’s ‘HeForShe’
campaign at a launch event on August 11, attended by government representatives, heads of UN
agencies, SI and other civil society organizations working to improve the lives of women and girls in Cameroon.
The campaign will be carried out for one year with diverse activities such as advocacy in the Senate and National Assembly, educative talks in ministries, sensitization of traditional authorities, engaging peer educators (men and boys), in order to reach out to more men across the 360 councils, engaging media owners and practitioners, in order to foster gender equality.
S.I club of Yaoundé created a ‘Girls Club’ in a Co-education Secondary School where they are raising quality education on gender equality to encourage girls in the study of sciences, as well as developing their leadership potentials. Started by S.I Yaoundé four years ago, the ‘Ladybird
Girls Club’ is a club of boys and
girls. Raising awareness on gender equality, the project has an impact not only on the girls, but also on the boys, educating that
boys and girls are equal and should be treated equally. With children from
11 to 18 years, S.I Yaoundé has seen the self esteem
and self confidence of the girls improve underlining the importance of their presence at the
launch of HeForShe Campaign as their work shares the same vision. Raising awareness of gender equality amongst boys and girls can transform generations to come.
