The SIE Federation is host to a range of inspiring projects which support the education and empowerment of women and girls. For International Day of Education, we hear from Soroptimists of Follo in Norway in collaboration with SI Rygge (Norway) and SI Nisporeni (Moldova) who wish to strengthen and support solutions to effectively meet the social emancipation needs of young girls.
Operating in Moldova, SI Nisporeni meticulously selected fifty-five girls aged 15-18 to undergo comprehensive training sessions addressing psychological barriers, inquisitive thinking, sexual violence prevention, educational perspectives, professional objectives, and personal grooming. The three clubs united in budgeting, fundraising, and project implementation, organizing sessions in educational institutions to foster teamwork, future planning, and open discussions.
Upon completion of the project, positive feedback echoed from the participants, with one expressing:
“I have learned much new information, found answers to many questions that were rhetorical before. I am now more self-confident because I understand that every person is special. More than this, I was trained to deliver speeches in public, helping me to develop my communication skills. Now, my vision is clearer and I know I want for my future career. I am convinced that I will continue my studies after graduating!”
Participants also gained public speaking skills, clearer career visions, and a commitment to continuing their education.
The project’s impact extended beyond the girls, garnering appreciation from teachers and parents who acknowledged the heightened awareness of risks and challenges, such as violence, abuse, and trafficking. The initiative not only equipped the girls with resilience but also instilled a sense of certainty about their future decisions. This collaborative endeavour by Soroptimists exemplifies their dedication to empowering young girls, enabling them to shape their destinies and become agents of positive change.
