Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls

Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls is one of Soroptimist International of the America’s (SIA) signature Dream Programs, and gives girls the tools they need to achieve their education and career goals, empowering them to break cycles of poverty, violence, and abuse. Since launching Dream It, Be It in 2015, over 138,000 girls have participated in 2,235 club projects across 15 countries.

Soroptimist International of Clovis (California) in the Sierra Pacific hosted a Dream It, Be It session that was inspiring, energizing, and engaging for the 47 girls who attended the conference style event. Using all seven sessions of the curriculum, SI/Clovis hosted the event at the Clovis Community College campus which allowed them to have students visit a chemistry lab and hear from students pursuing careers in the sciences.

They also had a team of presenters from the Reedley College pilot training component, including a flight simulator and an aviation mechanics presentation, and a team from the Clovis Adult School that presented their training opportunities in the medical field. One participant stated that “my favorite part was the different speakers and important women giving their time to showcase all the awesome careers. There were careers I didn’t know about and am now interested in.” This exposure to new career fields, especially in the sciences, is crucial to girls who are planning their futures and contemplating what’s next for them after secondary school.

Not only did the project impact the girls who attended but the club also attracted the attention of the local newspaper and gained two members from the event!
