Civic leaders in Glasgow (Scotland, UK) honoured Soroptimist International President Ann Garvie with a reception at the City Chambers on 10 December, Human Rights Day.  The Lord Provost Sadie
Docherty congratulated Ann on her Presidency, saying: “Wherever there are strong women, there is hope. It’s a privilege to have
an institution like Soroptimist International in our city. I am a great supporter
of their values and life-changing work.”
Bailie Margot Clark and the Deacon
Convener of Glasgow Hamish Brodie also attended.

President Ann said: “I am honoured and proud of the recognition
by my home city regarding my role as President of Soroptimist International.
There are so many women around the world still denied their human rights but
working together we can make a difference. In my Presidential role I am lucky
enough to meet inspiring Soroptimists around the world who are working to
educate, empower and enable opportunities for women and girls. As I carry out
my global Presidential duties I am delighted to act as an ambassador for Glasgow and Scotland.”

Soroptimist International has over 80,000 members in 127 countries and territories;
there has been a club  in Glasgow
for over 90 years. President Ann, who began her term as SI President in August 2013, is a member of Soroptimist
International Glasgow
City, which
supports local initiatives with PEEK (Possibilities for East End Kids) and
the Glasgow Marie Curie Hospice.

Every year, on Human Rights Day, the
President of Soroptimist International invites all Soroptimists to join her in
supporting a Soroptimist project.  International President Ann has just
announced her 2013 Appeal ‘See Solar, Cook Solar’ to support projects providing
women with education on renewable sources of energy and the provision of solar lanterns
and cookers.
