Restoring Dignity 2007-2008

Restoring Dignity is former SI President Margaret Lobo’s President’s Appeal for 2007 – 2008, securing a future for women in Ethiopia suffering from obstetric fistula.

Obstetric fistula is a medical condition and occurs due to prolonged or obstructed labour, resulting in a tear between the vagina, bladder or rectum.  Obstetric fistula can result in constant incontinence, shame, social segregation and other health problems. Whilst also a cause of maternal mortality, 93% of obstetric fistula survivors give birth to a stillborn baby, often after an agonising obstructed labour lasting days.

Despite fistulas being eradicated in countries where medical assistance is more advanced, The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that there are 2-3 million women in developing countries still living with the condition. Obstetric fistula is preventable; it can be largely avoided by delaying the age of first pregnancy, the end of harmful traditional practices, and timely access to medical care. In Ethiopia, there are at least 9000 women a year that develop fistulas; fewer than 15% of Ethiopian women receiving any form of care from a skilled childbirth attendant.

Soroptimist International raised funds to help women with incurable fistulas, with the aims of the project being to encourage independence and rebuild self-esteem. Juniper Cafe was opened in 2009, which provided hospitality training and opportunities to residents of Desta Mender – a farm and training facility where long-term patients reside close to the Addis Ababa Hamlin Fistula Hospital. The Juniper Cafe offers women a place to develop their skills in literacy, numeracy, cooking, health and hygiene, as well as providing business skills and micro-financing opportunities. Along with counselling and psychological support, these women are able to have future financial independence, greater self-confidence, and the ability to reintegrate into society. The Juniper Cafe proved a great success and has since expanded; their meat pies and quiches are known to be the best in Addis Ababa!
