Rose Academies Uganda: 2024 Update 2

This article provides a further update on the progress and milestones achieved through Soroptimist International Foundation’s partnership with Rose Academies Uganda, which has been supporting out-of-school youth through education and vocational skills training. The initiative has offered an engaging experience characterised by the enthusiasm of both learners and staff, as they embarked on a series of vocational skills courses in Baking, Tailoring, and Computer Literacy, working toward useful qualifications. Through a mix of accomplishments and new challenges, the program continues to make significant strides in empowering youth with the skills necessary for a bright future, as well as providing a safe and supportive environment to learn.

Baking Program

As the Basic Baking Program nears its conclusion, the project team has shifted focus toward critical administrative tasks, particularly the registration process for learners who will soon be assessed by the Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT). The team is diligently collecting bio-data to ensure a smooth and efficient registration process while classes continue according to the established work plan. Following the students exams, which took place in July, the internship program is now underway, providing learners with practical exposure to further refine their skills in a professional setting.

Over the past several months, trainees have been introduced to the fundamentals of baking through a comprehensive curriculum that spans hygiene and sanitation, basic bakery management, ingredient measurement, dough preparation, and various baking techniques. Despite challenges such as the lack of electricity and suitable shade for practical sessions, which hindered the use of modern baking equipment and disrupted outdoor activities, the program has successfully equipped trainees with the essential knowledge and hands-on experience required to excel in the baking industry. As the program progresses, the focus will remain on refining these skills, ensuring that trainees are well-prepared for their professional evaluations and future opportunities in the field.

Tailoring Program

The Tailoring Training Program has provided comprehensive education and practical skills development for the students, covering essential topics critical to the craft. The curriculum included an introduction to tailoring, the use of patterns to construct garments, and understanding how to operate a treadle sewing machine alongside various sewing techniques. Additionally, the program covered the properties of different fabrics and materials, and garment construction, with a focus on creating complex designs, children’s clothing, uniforms, and other tailored items.

Despite challenges, significant progress has been made in addressing issues related to student attendance and discipline. For students traveling long distances to attend classes, the project team arranged accommodations behind the facility, supervised by a staff member acting as a matron, which has substantially improved attendance. Furthermore, while a few students became pregnant during the Primary Seven holiday, efforts were made to keep them engaged in the program, resulting in continued improvement in their tailoring skills. The training has thus not only imparted technical knowledge but also fostered resilience and commitment among the participants, preparing them for future opportunities in the tailoring industry.

Computer Literacy Program

The Computer Literacy Program has concentrated on providing practical computer skills through hands-on training. Students have been engaged in learning fundamental skills, including how to use a keyboard and navigate computer systems, create documents using Microsoft Word, prepare documents for printing, and perform basic system unit maintenance. These foundational skills are crucial for their development and future opportunities in the digital world.

The program has encountered and overcome several challenges, particularly related to the power supply. Insufficient electricity initially hindered the ability to conduct effective practical sessions. However, with the use of a generator and the eventual installation of a long-promised electrical service in late June, there has been a dramatic improvement in the class learning experience. Additionally, the absence of an on-site printer necessitated the use of offsite printing services, which has unexpectedly enhanced the students’ understanding of computer office skills. Despite these obstacles, the program has successfully equipped the students with essential computer skills, laying a solid foundation for further learning and professional development.

Project Spending

Spending for the project has been focused on equipping the different training programs with the necessary tools and materials to facilitate learning. In January, significant investments were made to purchase five sewing machines, tailoring tools, and fabric for the tailoring classes. For the baking program, materials for constructing a wood-burning oven, along with baking equipment and supplies, were acquired. The technology centre was also outfitted with five computer workstations, seating, and essential software and accessories. Additional expenses covered travel and logistical costs for transporting equipment from Kampala to Soroti, as well as setting up the learning centre and meeting with stakeholders. Monthly expenses include tutor facilitation, training supplies, and tuition fees for the 20 girls to register for the Directorate of Industrial Training exams. The installation of electricity in June further enhanced the program’s capacity to deliver extended and more effective classes.

Conclusion

This sponsorship has driven significant progress and yielded positive outcomes, reflecting the dedication and growth of the participants across all programs. Despite the challenges often faced in rural communities, the students have shown remarkable resilience and commitment to their education and skill development.

In the bakery program, students have not only mastered basic baking techniques but have also gained valuable skills in recipe creation, inventory management, and small business operations. This comprehensive training equips them with the confidence and competence to explore entrepreneurial opportunities within the food industry.

The tailoring program has empowered participants with practical skills in garment construction, pattern making, and fabric selection. By incorporating modern fashion trends and business management into the curriculum, the program has prepared these young women to enter the fashion industry with a competitive edge, whether through employment or their own ventures.

In the computer literacy program, the girls have achieved proficiency in essential computer skills, including popular software programs like Microsoft Word. These technological competencies are crucial in today’s digital world, providing a strong foundation for further education and career advancement in various sectors.

Overall, this sponsorship has been instrumental in transforming the lives of these young women. The skills and knowledge they have acquired through these programs have not only enhanced their personal development but also opened doors to economic independence and improved quality of life. As they continue to apply what they have learned, they are expected to serve as inspiring role models and catalysts for change within their communities.

The project team has extended heartfelt gratitude to Soroptimist International Foundation’s support and commitment to empowering young women. Together, significant strides are being made towards a bright and equitable future.
