Here is a report received from Dawn Marie, International Programme Director, on the eve of CSW 55, Monday 21st February.
"Soroptimists and WAGGGS ( World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts) have once again united to work toward our collective mission of empowering Women and Girls at a UN Event. This year we are taking a multi faceted approach which includes co-sponoring two parallel events at CSW, sharing in joint advocacy at CSW and meeting informally to discuss our mutual plan for promoting causes for women and girls, particularly related to Non- Formal Education strategies and Preventing Violence Against Girls and Women.
8 Soroptimists and 8 WAGGGS women from around the world just shared an informal briefing at the Girl Scouts USA headquarters and learned a bit about each other’s interests, work and ideas for advancing our causes. WAGGGS presented ideas they shared at a Youth Briefing yesterday that featured the new Under Secretary General of UN Women, Michele Bachelet. Margaret Cook, SI APD presented a brief overview of activities from today’s CSW-NGO Consultation day that also featured USG Bachelet! Voices in the room came from Semia from Tunisia, Careen from Rwanda, Liz from UK, Alice of USA, and Yvonne & Fiona both from New Zealand to name a few. Our internationality and commitment was palpable and shared. With NEW SOCIAL MEDIA outreach guaranteeing that our work will extend beyond the rooms of CSW and out to the world, we will endeavour to tweet, tumble and post updates on facebook as often as we can! Each group shared their statements and flyers. We plan to meet regularly throughout the week to share what we learned.
Partnership is a living, evolving action…SI is so pleased to have this growing relationship with the young women of WAGGGS!"
