SI of Hills District
Inc, Australia has responded to a lack of information amongst women in their
community about the signs and symptoms of domestic violence and its effect on
families. The club teamed up with a practicing lawyer, White Ribbon Day
Ambassadors, professional counsellors, the local Area Command Police
Superintendent and DVLO and hosted a seminar day where topics such as ‘What Is
A Healthy Relationship?’, ‘Healthy Ways To Resolve Conflict’, ‘Parenting Skills
and Connecting With Adolescents’ and ‘Your Rights And Other Matters’ were
discussed. All participants left the seminar better informed and aware of the
issues surrounding domestic violence.
SI Bangkok, Thailand has
provided communities in areas of East Thailand affected by severe flooding with
food, water and safe sanitation supplies. Effective deployment of these
supplies has been achieved through direct communication with village
representatives from the worst hit areas.
SI Bangsar, Malaysia has
responded to requests from single mothers and housewives living in the low-cost
housing area in Kuala Lumpur to learn English. The women explained that
learning English would enable them to understand information written in English
such as labels of products, entertainment as well as information and sign posts
in areas around the city. In meeting their request, the club developed
"Learn English for Housewives" which is a programme consisting of ten
interactive, fun and relevant English lesson held in and around the community.
Some of the lessons were on introducing themselves, family and friends,
identifying product labels, signs and signals in English, making telephone and
social media conversations and asking questions. The classes empowered the
local women and enabled club members to gain more trust and cooperation within the
community.
SI of Bombay Chembur,
India celebrated International Day of the Girl Child by hosting a talk
which was attended by 500 students and raised awareness about the issues of the
girl child, create gender sensitization among the youth and advocate the cause
of education, health and sanitation for the girl child. SI Bombay Chembur also
launched an exhibition which displayed 150 posters created by students. The
exhibition was attended by 5000 students and created a collective voice against
violence towards the girl child.
SI Zug, Switzerland has
been tackling the threat of violence against elderly women by raising funds to
provide further education for geriatric care employees. They have also been
raising awareness amongst their community by providing information on topics
such as how to prevent violence, manage conflict and suitable methods of crisis
intervention.
SI Fulton County,
U.S.A. worked in partnership with the Fulton County DA and Sargent for the
Johnstown Police Department and school districts in our county to conduct an ongoing
programming to educate girls about internet safety and sexting as part of their
grant-funded program called ASPIRE. Surveys showed that girls found the
programming helpful and informative, helping them to know what to do to be safe
on the internet, with their cell phones and on what to do if they ever fall
victim to cyber-bullying.
SI of Kumba, Cameroon has been working to improve
the employability of women when they leave prison. The club has supplied their
local women’s prison with sewing machines, needles, thread and a trained tailor
to teach inmates sewing skills that can be used to produce items for sale. This
empowers the women in such a way that they will no longer need to rely on a
life of crime to survive once they have completed their sentence.
SI of Cirencester
& District, United Kingdom is raising awareness amongst health
professionals regarding the problem of Female Genital Mutilation and how they
can help identify girls at risk. The club have written to all the doctors’
surgeries in the town and to all the Members of Parliament who serve their
members. MP’s responded with letters expressing their strong support for the
campaign against FGM. SI of Cirenchester have demonstrated that when clubs
raise enough awareness locally, it can impact on national policies.
SI, Bangalore, India has launched their pilot project ‘Fistful Of Nutrition’
which is a program where protein rich foods such as lentils, along with
potatoes and onions, are collected from wealthy schools and donated to lesser
privileged school where a midday meal is provided to all the students. By
helping the children coming from the deprived section of their society, they
hope to build a healthier India where malnutrition is eliminated and girls can
continue their studies.

Kalmar, Sweden has participated in the Swedish Union Solvatten Project
which aims to give women and girls living in areas of high water pollution a better standard of living by providing solar powered devices
which boil water. The club raised funds by selling crafts at a local market and
were subsequently able to travel to Nepal to donate two water purifying
devices.
