SI supports and endorses letter to Ban-Ki-moon

The final
outcome document of Rio+20,
‘The Future We Want’ invites the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon to present a
report on intergenerational solidarity and future generations. The World Future
Council has written a joint open letter, together with 25 civil society
organisations and alliances from around the world, including Soroptimist
International, to the UN Secretary-General, emphasising the importance of this
report. It urges him to give priority and proper resources to the preparation
of this report.

All signatories were
involved closely with Rio+20 and efforts now need to be made to ensure that the
Secretary General’s report on intergenerational justice and future generations
plays as strong a part as possible in helping to bring the needs of future
generations into the heart of the work of the United Nations. It is a way of giving future generations a voice.

Soroptimist
International has signed this because we believe that this report must help
bring further understanding around the concept of intergenerational justice. We
also believe it will propose effective tools whereby a longer term perspective
to decision making can be practically applied.

The request to the
Secretary General to prepare the report forms part of paragraph 86
of The
Future We Want
, the UN member state-agreed outcome text from this year’s UN
Conference on Sustainable Development.
