SI President Sharon Fisher is delighted to announce the charter of SI Khartoum, the first Soroptimist Club in Sudan, North East Africa. Making strong progress, Soroptimist International Africa Federation (SIAF) was inaugurated in June 2020, and is the newest member to join the global Soroptimist International organisation.
SI Khartoum has 22 founding members who are very active in their local community. With their first project, the club has been following in the footsteps of the first Soroptimists, by planting over 1000 trees to combat climate change and deforestation. Looking to the future, the club is preparing a proposal for a women’s development center, that provides care and training for women and girls.
Connie Mutunhu, the first President of Soroptimist International Africa Federation (SIAF), for 2020-2022, explains:
“The birth of SI Khartoum is really exciting to Soroptimist International Africa Federation (SIAF). History has been made twice. Not only is it the first club to be chartered in Sudan but also Sudan is a new territory in SIAF! The club has rolled out a project to intervene in the COVID-19 pandemic. I congratulate Club President Sulafa for steering the ship and also SI Agadir in Morocco for mentoring SI Khartoum. I am confident that this new club will bring meaningful and positive change to women and girls in Khartoum and beyond!”
SI Sudan President, Sulafa Abdalla adds:
“It was a great pleasure for the first Soroptimist club charter in Sudan to be attended by the President of Soroptimist International, and the President of Africa Federation, and the rest of the sisters from different continents. We are very proud to be the founders of Soroptimist International in Sudan. At this turning time in my country, we do need sistership and support in order to be able to achieve our goals in awakening awareness of women’s rights, fighting against rules created for more humiliation of women, the elimination of all forms of discrimination, and to have complete equalities in chances for education, work, and leadership. We are willing to be a real addition to Soroptimist international!”

We would like to know if all our members in SI Khartoum are safe, given the uncertain political situation at present. If possible please convey our concern about our Soroptimist sisters in Sudan to Sulafa Abdalla and tell her that the members are all in our thoughts.
With best wishes,
Gwendolen Webster
