Bette Levy,
SI UN Representative presented Soroptimist International’s oral statement on “Managing
the transition from the Millennium Development Goals to the Sustainable
Development Goals: What it will take”. The statement was presented at the Annual Ministerial Review of
ECOSOC in New York. This year, SI was one of only twenty-three NGOs who were
selected to present their oral statement. Speaking at ECOSOC is a significant
opportunity for the global voice of Soroptimist International to be heard by
government representatives from across the world.

SI’s
statement focused on the need to invest in gender equality and the important
role that NGOs have in ensuring vulnerable groups are included and represented
in the new sustainable development agenda. You can watch Bette presenting SI’s

ECOSOC is
the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and is a central platform
for discussion on sustainable development. It is the principle body for review,
policy dialogue and recommendations on economic, social and environmental
issues including internationally agreed development goals. ECOSOC is also
important as it engages a wide variety of stakeholders, including NGOs like
Soroptimist International.

2015 is a
critical year for the UN and NGOs as development actors mobilise to try and
agree a new development agenda. By presenting a statement to ECOSOC, SI is
playing its part in representing the needs of women and girls and for their
needs to be tackled by the Sustainable Development Goals. You can read SI’s
