The Fifth Session of United Nations Environment Assembly

Mary Muia, SI UNEP Representative reports from the Opening Plenary of the Fifth UNEA 5.2 Session, Nairobi Kenya

The Fifth Session of United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 5.2) began 28 February in Nairobi, Kenya, under the theme: Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Besides considering substantive matters of the agenda, UNEA 5.2 is expected to deliver a Ministerial Declaration guided by the above theme.

“We meet at a time of great turmoil. At a time that shows us the importance of coming together as a global community for peace and for a healthy environment. At a time when peaceful solutions are urgently needed. But this is also a time when multilateralism is more important than ever”, Inger Anderson, UNEP Executive Director in her opening remarks.

The Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change (IPCC) has today launched the sixth assessment report titled; Climate Change 2022: Impact, Adaptations and Vulnerability that outlines the complex interactions between climate change and risks for nature and people, how species and ecosystems respond to climate change, challenges faced by people living in cities and rural areas, how communities around the globe can be strengthened, and notably, how to reduce high risks and losses for the most vulnerable. Clearly, our future climate depends on what we do, how we live our lives and how we can safeguard nature and people.

The resumed fifth session of UNEA 5.2 agenda is expected to rally nations, intergovernmental organisations, global major groups stakeholders, civil society organisations and communities, to deliver solutions to the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.

Soroptimist International (SI) delegation of the SI UNEA Representatives Mary Muia, Asha Abdulrahman and Beatrice Oluoch, are in attendance to engage and raise the voices of women and girls in the lined up of UNEA 5.2 Cluster Resolutions.

Immediately after UNEA 5.2, the Assembly will hold a Special Session of the Assembly on 3-4 March 2022, which is devoted to the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the creation of UN Environment Programme in 1972 (UNEP@50).

The Fifth Session of United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 5.2) will take place 28 February – 2 March 2022.

Great representation right there! Indeed for us to achieve the green economy we shall require social participation from various groups of people especially women and girls who can really assist in preserving the natural resources around them.
