The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2024
Produced annually, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Report provides an in-depth review of the ongoing issues, challenges, and steps toward achieving the SDGs in line with the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. Referring to the latest data and estimates, the 2024 report details areas with prominent setbacks while also highlighting where tangible progress has been made.
For instance, this year’s report showcases global reductions in child mortality, prevention of HIV infections, and improved access to energy and mobile broadband, bridging the increasingly prevalent digital divide. Similarly, the report also highlights where further and accelerated action is required, particularly where progress toward the SDGs is being undermined – extensively, this relates to areas such as climate change, peace and security, as well as inequalities within, among, and between countries.
According to the report, with only six years remaining until the 2030 ‘target’, only 17 percent of the SDG targets are on track, while nearly half are showing only minimal or moderate progress. Much of this lacking progress has been attributed to the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, alongside escalating conflicts, geopolitical tensions, and the burgeoning climate crisis – of which developing countries are ill equipped to handle without appropriate levels of international support.
The 2024 report calls for immediate and bold actions to address these multifaceted crises, emphasising the need for peace as a foundation for sustainable development and urging stakeholders to work towards ending conflicts. Additionally, it calls for wealthier economies to unlock greater financial support for vulnerable countries and for a more equitable role for developing nations in global economic governance. To combat the triple crisis of climate change, air pollution, and biodiversity loss, the report advocates for a just climate transition that reorients economies towards sustainable growth.
As the world approaches the 2030 deadline for sustainable development, the imperative for driven, conscientious action has never been greater.
As noted by Li Junhua, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, in the report introduction:
The time for words has passed. The political declaration of the SDG Summit must be translated into actions. It is still possible to create a better, more sustainable and more inclusive world for all by 2030. But the clock is running out. We must act now, and act boldly.
